Agsu Town was repeatedly destroyed by internal and foreign enemies in connection with many military political factors, hence the status of being official capital of Shirvan passed to Shamakhi later to Fit. Agsu Town become periodically a square for military operations, exposed to demolitions was last destroyed by Shirvan khan Mustafa khan to avoid enemy siege on the eve of Iranian army’s attack commanded by Abbas Mirza in 1806 and the city life ended with that. Medieval Agsu Town covers about 39, 8 hectare field being in a right-angled form. Its around was fortified with many mighty defense system being in a deep ditch and shaft form. There are 4 cemeteries around the monument. Most saved of them is the cemetery located in the north-west direction. Popular people from the descent of Shirvan rulers were buried mainly in that cemetery belonged to late 18th century. Primary archaeological excavations were implemented in the monument by Agsu-Ismayilli expedition in 1983. A large-scale archaeological excavation started there by an Agsu expedition of NASA Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography with financial support of philanthropists in initiative of “MIRAS” Social Organization since March, this year. Nearly 9000 sq/ms area on another were explored there in five areas. Let us add that presently large-scale archaeological investigations are under way in Agsu. Parallel, the expedition leadership implements regular work in the direction of conservation and protection of displayed findings for future generations. This year opening ceremony of expo-complex “Medieval Agsu town: handicraft estate” was held by Agsu Archeological Expedition. The great peculiarity of the museum is the construction in the site of excavations. The museum reflects the life of medieval estate. The museum will attract interest of tourists arriving in the country in tourism year.
